According to EU filings, Mercedes-Benz intends to continue its regulatory pool with Volvo Cars, Polestar, and Smart both in 2026 and 2027. That is despite an accelerated BEV model rollout from Mercedes, with MBEA-dedicated models such as the GLC and C-Class models entering the European market during 2025, alongside the MMA-based CLA model.
Geely, which holds a 10% equity stake in Mercedes and is a major JV equity holder in the Mercedes/Smart joint-venture as well as majority stakeholder in both Polestar (including the Li Shufu investment) and Volvo Cars, remains the common denominator.
German premium peer BMW Group meanwhile achieved EU CO2 compliance during 2025 without the need for CO2 pooling. BMW benefits from the MINI brand, which inherently has lower EU CO2 emissions than the headline BMW stable brand.
Mercedes' intention to pool can also be seen as a potential hedge in an unstable geopolitical environment.
