Chinese models achieved a market share of more than 10% in the UK's new passenger car market during the most recent quarter, while MG delivered more volumes than established brands such as Vauxhall.
Chinese manufacturers are increasingly gaining market share across the UK at a rapid pace, according to the latest Schmidt Automotive Research findings.
During the most recent quarter, Chinese models accounted for 11.8% of the UK's new passenger car market, setting a new record and representing a 2.7 percentage point sequential increase over the previous quarter, as well as a doubling over the same quarter last year (5.1%).
The UK isn't impacted by the EU's anti-subsidy tariffs placed on Chinese-made passenger cars, which range from 17% (BYD) to 35.3% (SAIC) for Chinese OEMs, while levies for foreign manufacturers manufacturing electric cars in China begin from 7.8% (Tesla). This is potentially leading Chinese manufacturers to prioritise the UK over EU markets when it comes to BEV deliveries, although a large proportion of the gains have come from non-BEVs.
Although BYD has been claiming most of the press headlines, it is China's Chery Group, spread across three brands – Chery-brand, Jaecoo and Omoda – that has seen the most impressive gains so far this year.
Combined volumes rose from 6,429 units during the opening quarter of the year, to 18,353 during Q3 and surpassed BYD's 16,124 volumes during the most recent quarter.
Meanwhile, SAIC's MG remained the Chinese brand market leader, accounting for 22,777 new vehicles, although that was down by almost 2,000 units compared to the opening quarter of the year.
In terms of market share, the three largest Chinese brands, mentioned above, accounted for 90% of all Chinese-brand models entering the UK during Q3.
Compared to incumbent Western brands, MG surpassed Vauxhall's 19,733 new Q3 volumes, while Chery came to within 1,400 units of doing the same, according to the same research.
