A preview from our latest Q2 2025 Chinese OEM European Market Radar Study: A record just over 7% of the new Western European passenger car market during Q2 2025 consisted of models manufactured in China, including Western brand models manufactured there, according to the latest study (€) from Schmidt Automotive Research
However, the Western-brand element of the equation continues to decline as OEMs re-shore closer to home (Volvo Cars EX30, BMW IX3) to avoid EU anti-subsidy tariffs and mitigate against increased geopolitical turbulence.
Meanwhile, the mix of non-BEV models from Chinese brands was the main driver, as Chinese OEMs continue to de-risk away from a single BEV drivetrain, most at risk from the countervailing EU tariffs, which were implemented at the end of 2024.
However, a return from BEVs from Chinese OEMs was notable in Q2 2025 nonetheless, which can be partly attributed to an increase in logistical capacity (with strengthened decks supporting more BEV capacity) – and consequential lower shipping charter rates – alongside OEMs such as BYD continuing their market rollout prior to their near-shoring local production about to commence, which is expected to result in a reduction in BEV volumes shipped once again.
Leapmotor is also expected to begin local European production at a Spanish Stellantis facility to mitigate against tariffs and qualify those vehicles for various subsidies that include local production elements to the qualifying criteria.
However, that capacity may be absorbed by new players, such as Changan, which is about to make its regional market debut.
