BYD sees first sequential fall in monthly European BEV market share

According to Schmidt Automotive Research data, China's BYD saw its share of the Western European BEV market contract to 4.4% in June on a 12-month trailing basis, following 40 months of sequential growth.


The data published in the full client European Electric Car Study showed the Chinese company is currently distracted from BEVs, as it front-loads its own PCTC vessels with PHEVs, which don't incur an additional 17% tariff on each model imported to the EU, as has been the case with BEVs since November 2024.

Positive product cadence effects from both Western incumbents, striving to meet tougher regulatory targets, and Chinese peers, starting to filter through as well as the strong return from Tesla (9.8%) since the start of this year, are all beginning to have negative effects for BYD's market share in a volatile and competitive market environment, increasingly being shaded by domestic market protectionism. However across PHEVs BYD growth remains robust recording 14% share of all PHEVs that entered the Western European region so far this year, and contributing to Chinese brands accumulating over 30% of the PHEV market in June, and 25% so far this year, with EU regulators well aware of this calculated pivotal pivot playing out.
