Chinese OEMs combined saw a record month when it comes to new BEV deliveries across Western Europe in June driven by special effects

Volume of Chinese BEV cars by month in Europe

While Chinese passenger cars continue to account for only a minor share of the West European new passenger car market during the opening half of 2024, or just 3.1 per cent of the total 6.1 million market with just under 200,000 new deliveries (+18.8% y/y), their share of the region's BEV-only market during the same period saw their market share rise to above 10 per cent, according to the latest European Electric Car Study (€) published by Schmidt Automotive Research

SAIC's MG brand accounted for over half of all new Chinese-brand BEV volumes entering the region during June, with 13,000 of the new 25,100 pure electric passenger car models.

Of those, 37% were delivered in just one market, Germany, despite state-backed subsidies being withdrawn since the start of this year.

However, our latest study has identified that special factors likely impacted that inventory clearing boost month, which saw the MG4 record its highest monthly volumes on record in Germany, ending the period as the number two most registered BEV model in June, behind Volkswagen's ID.3.

The C-segment model was also the fourth most registered BEV model across the entire 18 market West European region during the same period.

The latest study, published next week, identifies what is likely behind this and why it is unlikely to be sustained in the short term. Tailwinds are also around the corner however.◼︎︎
