Exclusive research: China's CHERY, sneaks under the radar to becomes one of the largest Sino OEMs, using a shadow fleet

Bar chart shows SAIC, BYD, Chery, Geely, Xpeng, and Others' car registrations in Western Europe. SAIC leads with 35,700; Chery at 11,600.

Exclusive research: China's CHERY, although not selling any models across Europe under its own brand, and has mostly gone under the radar across the continent, is slowly becoming one of the region's largest Chinese OEMs, albeit spread across an array of obscure brand badges.

The latest Schmidt Automotive Research data identifies that the Chinese brand, which was the largest exporter of passenger cars from China last year, according to official Chinese government data, has pushed ahead of Geely's Chinese brands during 2025. Chery accounted for 1 per cent share of the total West European new car market during the opening two months of the year and accounted for 15.6% of all Chinese-brand models entering the 18 market region so far this year.
