Likely Volvo EX60 rollout problmes at a crucial time for the company, as deliveries stutter

Just two years after the issues Volvo Cars suffered with the EX90 and the SPA2 architecture rollout, which also accommodates the Polestar 3, and repeatedly promising this time with the SPA3 architecture, which has been designed from the ground up to accommodate BEVs only such as the EX60, things are running to plan and will be different this time around; only a trickle of EX60s has entered the European market so far.
Just 39 Volvo EX60 deliveries were recorded across Sweden in September, according to Mobility Sweden monthly data, and a further 13 across the Netherlands during the same period, according to Bovag-sourced data, even though customer deliveries were planned to start in August.
These figures are down on August data, suggesting an issue. However, it is unclear whether that could stem from the software or the newly introduced production techniques and material mix used to manufacture the model at their home plant in Gothenburg, Sweden.
When questioned during the recent strategic portfolio outlook event in Stockholm last month about how the EX60 rollout was proceeding, Chief Commercial Officer Erik Severinson maintained confidence that everything was still going according to plan and failed to mention any issues.
The plan was originally a 40,000 production level during 2026.
Any delay could harm the Chinese majority-owned Swedish company, given that peers such as BMW Group, launching a direct competitor, appear to have found more stability with the equivalent IX3 rollout, with orders having already surpassed 100,000 units and 50,000 having already left the Hungarian production facility.
New CEO Zellmer doesn't enter his new role as the head of Volvo Cars until October 2027.
