New West European BEV passenger car registrations hit a new 12-month rolling record, according to new research

The Western European new plug-in passenger car market on a 12-month rolling basis sees BEV passenger car volumes hit a new 2.05 million new registration record, in the period between April 2024 and March 2025, according to the latest edition of the Schmidt Automotive Research monthly European Electric Car Study Compass.
Meanwhile, combined PHEV and BEV volumes returned back above 3 million units, the first time in three quarters.
A number of events saw key movements over the past four-year monitored period, while key policy announcements on a macro European basis and individual markets are expected to further increase the market's trajectory going forward, as underlined in more detail in the monthly study.
Meanwhile, the first indications of a halt in the downward trajectory of PHEVs have also been spotted as ranges increase to adjust to a new utility factor measurement across the EU, while certain markets have also delayed or scrapped fiscal reductions on offer to PHEVs, while a host of new models featuring DC charging enter the region. A pivot from Chinese OEMs focusing their attention away from BEVs due to the Anti-Subsidy tariffs in place is also benefiting PHEVs, with the second most registered PHEV during 2025, across the region, being a Chinese-brand model
